(Minghui.org) An 83-year-old retired teacher in Chongqing was admitted to prison on May 21, 2026, to serve a 1.5-year term for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Wang Jinxiu’s ordeal began in late May 2024, when the police arranged plainclothes officers to stake out her apartment to monitor her daily activities. In September 2024, Zhang Shubei, the chief of the Qinggang Street Police Station, began to build a case to frame her.
Ms. Wang was arrested at home on November 6, 2025, by Shi Yuyao and other officers from the Qinggang Street Police Station. They raided her home and took her to the police station for interrogation. She was released around midnight. The police then continued to monitor her. They installed a surveillance camera in her apartment hallway and followed her when she went out.
Ms. Wang was tried by the Jiangbei District Court on December 16, 2025, and sentenced to one and a half years shortly after. She was seized by the police on May 20, 2026, and admitted to the Chongqing Women’s Prison in Zouma Town the next day.
Past Persecution
Ms. Wang, a retired teacher from the Qinggang Town Experimental Primary School, has been repeatedly targeted over the past 27 years for upholding her faith in Falun Gong. Prior to her latest prison sentence, she served two labor camp terms totaling nearly three years, and a four-year prison term. Despite her 32 years of service, her school suspended her pension in October 1999. She has gone to various agencies many times to seek justice, but to no avail.
First One-Year Labor Camp Term, Extended by 11 Months
Ms. Wang went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong in October 1999. She was arrested at Tiananmen Square and taken to the Fengtai Stadium for detention. She was escorted back to Chongqing on October 31 and held in a local lockup, where the guards handcuffed and shackled her. Not long after, she was given a one-year labor camp term.
While serving time at the Chongqing Women’s Forced Labor Camp, Ms. Wang was forced to work for long hours without pay. She was also forced to stand or squat for hours on end, often from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., causing her hands and feet to become extremely swollen. In the summer, the guards forced her to stand in the sun, and in the winter she was made to stand by open windows.
The guards arranged several inmates to monitor and torture Ms. Wang. They restricted her restroom use and did not allow her to shower. One inmate once grabbed her shoulder and hit her hard on the left side of her rib cage. She collapsed on the ground from the excruciating pain. She saw stars and had difficulty breathing. Her hands also turned dark. The pain lasted for over a month.
On another occasion, the inmates dragged Ms. Wang up and down the stairs from the third floor to the first floor and back again.
As Ms. Wang remained firm in her faith, her term was extended by 11 months, and she wasn’t released until September 22, 2001.
Upon returning home, she was devastated to find out that her pension had been suspended. She went back to the school where she worked five times, to talk to the principal. Each time, the principal threatened to call the police and have her arrested or sent to a labor camp.
The police also harassed Ms. Wang from time to time, sometimes knocking on her door in the middle of the night.
Sentenced to Four Years
Ms. Wang was arrested on January 18, 2002, while buying fruit on the street. After taking her to the police station, an officer stomped on her chest. She was handcuffed to metal rings in the restroom for 52 hours, with her arms pulled apart.
Ms. Wang’s family looked everywhere for her during her detention, and finally found her on the third day of her arrest. They burst into tears when they saw her handcuffed in the restroom, and realized she had not been given any water or food since her arrest.
Ms. Wang was then transferred to a detention center. Because of the torture she endured at the police station, she was unable to eat anything. Yet, the guard kept her handcuffed and shackled. In a short period of time, she became so weak that she could not stand or care for herself.
Ms. Wang was carried to the courthouse months later for a trial and sentenced to a four-year term. She faced continued torture after being admitted to the Yongchuan Labor Reform Farm. After spending over a year in the new admission division, she was transferred to the regular division, where she was forced to work without pay during the day. She was forced to attend brainwashing sessions in the evening. The inmates assigned to monitor her didn’t allow her to shower, do laundry, wash her dishes, or use the restroom. She was also deprived of sleep and not allowed to talk to others.
One day, she noticed a strange taste in her food. The next day, she caught an inmate adding crushed pills to her food. She reported it to the guard on duty, who shifted the blame to the inmate and arranged for a different person to monitor her.
Continued Harassment and Surveillance
After Ms. Wang was released in January 2006, she noticed that the authorities had tapped her landline telephone. Some plainclothes officers were staked out outside her apartment to monitor her. Police officers and residential staffers also harassed her at home.
When the police failed to find Ms. Wang in July 2009, they arrested two local Falun Gong practitioners instead. To avoid implicating other practitioners, Ms. Wang was forced to live away from home. Her family also lived in fear due to the surveillance.
Second Labor Camp Term of One Year
Ms. Wang was arrested on June 13, 2011, while walking on the street. The police raided her home, and confiscated her Falun Gong books, five computers, two printers, two MP5 players, one MP3 player, a hard drive, some blank discs, copy paper, and over 6,000 yuan in cash.
Ms. Wang was twice denied admission to the local detention center due to health issues. But the police refused to release her, and held her at the Qingshan Hospital. Officers from the local government, police station, and residential committee took turns monitoring her.
When Ms. Wang underwent another physical exam after 17 days, she was found to still have dangerously high blood pressure. The doctor, however, wrote a much lower reading in the report. When the police took her to the detention center, she was still denied admission. But the police managed to convince the guards to take her in hours later.
Seven days later, Ms. Wang was given another one-year labor camp term. Due to her extremely high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat, the police released her after forcing her family to pay 10,000 yuan. She was ordered to serve time at home, and her family was forced to sign the case document on her behalf. She was weak and unsteady on her feet when she returned home.
More Arrests
Ms. Wang was taken to the Domestic Security Office in the first half of 2012. Her home was ransacked as well. She was restrained in a metal interrogation chair, and shackled. She protested the persecution and was released five hours later.
Ms. Wang was arrested again on September 25, 2012, while visiting her brother. She was taken to the Lushan Village Brainwashing Center and released three days later due to extremely high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat.
Ms. Wang was arrested another time on May 7, 2013, after being reported by a community worker. She was strip-searched and released four hours later.
Local 610 Office agents attempted to arrest Ms. Wang on May 12, 2014. When they failed to find her, they arrested her daughter instead and took the younger woman to a local brainwashing center.
