(Minghui.org) Minghui.org had previously reported on threats against a 58-year-old woman to keep her in detention after completing a 3.5-year prison term for her faith in Falun Gong on June 5, 2026. This report provides additional details.
Ms. Zhang Chuanwen of Qingyuan County, Liaoning Province was arrested on December 4, 2022, and secretly sentenced to three and a half years on March 24, 2023. After she was admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on July 26, 2023, she was subjected to various forms of abuse. See the related reports for details.
On April 17, 2026, team lead Zhao Yang asked if Ms. Zhang would still practice Falun Gong after her term ended in two months. Zhao also defamed Falun Gong. Ms. Zhang corrected herm and she threatened to shock her with electric batons. Guard Rong Yan also threatened to have Ms. Zhao’s local police station pick her up after she finished serving time.
The prison notified Ms. Zhang’s family in mid-May 2026 that they would hand her over to her local government on the day of her scheduled release and that the family should prepare to send in some clothes for her.
The family insisted that they pick her up and said they’d not mail in any clothes as they’d bring the clothes in when they went to the prison. They called the prison administration bureau to inquire about Ms. Zhang’s prison release. The person answering the call asked how the family found out about their contact information and denied having any knowledge about the prison’s plan to hand Ms. Zhang over to her local government.
The night before Ms. Zhang’s release, guard Rong attempted to drive a wedge between her and her family by saying, “Look! Your family has abandoned you! They didn’t even send in clothes for you or plan to pick you up tomorrow!”
Ms. Zhang insisted that she wait for her family to arrive the next day to bring in clothes for her to change out of the prison uniform. Several prison officials then came to have a talk with her. They claimed that it was “a new policy” that all prisoners be sent straight to their local judicial bureaus at the end of their terms.
Close to 6 a.m. on June 5, guard Yu Yakun ordered Ms. Zhang to sign a piece of paper reading, “I’ll be responsible for all expenses incurred by the prison in taking me to my local government.” She refused because her family was barred from picking her up.
The guards then had her exit a side entrance and get into a car. They did not want to run into her family, whom they expected to show up at the main entrance.
Ms. Wan was driven to her local government. Her family, forewarned about her continued detention, had been waiting there. She refused to sign any paperwork, and her family successfully got her into their own car and drove her home.
Prior to her latest prison term, Ms. Zhang had served two labor camp terms and a prior prison term for upholding her faith in Falun Gong.
