(Minghui.org) While a 67-year-old woman in Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province, was detained for her faith in Falun Gong, her incapacitated husband died after repeated police harassment and intimidation.
The authorities refused to release Ms. Zhang Ailian to tend to her husband’s funeral, so their son flew back from Canada to handle the matter. Ms. Zhang was later sentenced to over three years and is now serving time at the Shandong Province Women’s Prison.
Ms. Zhang’s wrongful conviction stemmed from her arrest in September 2025, when she went to a wholesale market to distribute Falun Gong informational materials. A security guard recorded and reported her. The police followed her home, raided her place, and arrested her.
While Ms. Zhang was held at the Yuelou Detention Center, the police harassed her husband multiple times, demanding to know where she got the materials. Her husband was already incapacitated and lost her care due to her detention. His health further deteriorated from the mental distress. Less than one month after her arrest, he passed away alone at home. His body was found days later, when his relatives came to visit.
Ms. Zhang was devastated by her husband’s passing, yet the local 610 Office agents refused to release her to handle the funeral. Her son had to rush back to China from Canada.
Ms. Zhang was later sentenced to over three years (exact term unknown) and secretly admitted to prison.
