(Minghui.org) Ms. Li Chunhua, an award-winning former art teacher of Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, was illegally arrested on August 21, 2025, for writing information about Falun Gong in public places. She was sentenced to 4.5 years in March 2026 after a secret trial was held on December 8 without informing her family. Below is an account of the persecution she has suffered.
Too Weak to Walk
In April 2026, Ms. Li was transferred from the detention center to the Training Team Group Six in Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison. As she had been on several hunger strikes while in the detention center, she was extremely weak and could not walk by herself. She could only crawl. After entering Group Six, other Falun Gong practitioners helped her to the restroom to wash up.
Forced to Sleep on the Ground
A few days later, some inmates and the team leader used various methods to prevent other practitioners from helping Ms. Li. She needed assistance when getting down from the bed but the team leader forbade others from helping her and put her bedding on the floor. She was forced to sleep on the floor unless she wrote a guarantee statement to renounce her faith.
The guard took away Ms. Li’s bed board and mattress on May 6, 2026, forcing her to sleep on the ground again. She could only lay her blanket on the ground and sleep in her cotton-padded clothes.
Obstructed from Doing Falun Gong Exercises
To recover faster, Ms. Li started doing the Falun Gong exercises but three inmates tried to obstruct her from doing so and also reported her to the guards. One inmate even followed her closely to prevent her from doing the exercises. Despite this, Ms. Li persisted and did the exercises for 10 days. Her health gradually recovered and she could walk independently. She continued to do the exercises.
Violent Nighttime Beating, Deprived of Using Restroom
Ms. Li was beaten by inmates from midnight to 1 a.m. on May 6. One inmate tried to poke her eyes while the other hit her with slippers. Another inmate refused to let her use the restroom.
One inmate reported the incident to a guard on duty and another inmate on night duty tried to stop the beatings. A practitioner, Ms. Li Derong, requested the inmates return the bed board and mattress to Ms. Li, while practitioners from other teams rallied together for Ms. Li. In the end, Ms. Li was allowed to use the restroom.
Hunger Strike After Obstructed from Doing Exercises
The guards and various inmates tried to obstruct Ms. Li from doing the exercises again on May 20. She went on a hunger strike to protest. She was force-fed on the seventh day. After two more days of hunger striking and force feeding, the guards agreed to let her do the exercises.
