(Minghui.org) Ms. Li Yuxiang’s family learned on September 8, 2026, that the 76-year-old Tianjin woman had been admitted to the Tianjin Women’s Prison to serve a 4.5-year term for her faith in Falun Gong.
The wrongful conviction of Ms. Li stemmed from her arrest at home on July 5, 2024, by 16 police officers from the Nanlou Police Station and the Wuqing District Domestic Security Office. They targeted her after discovering that she mailed letters to a court and a procuratorate in Jiangsu Province urging them to stop participating in the persecution of Falun Gong.
None of the officers produced their IDs or a search warrant. Several of them held her down on the couch, while the others ransacked her home. They confiscated her Falun Gong books and cell phone.
Ms. Li was taken to the Wuqing District Police Case Processing Center for interrogation. Terrified, her blood pressure became dangerously high and she had other symptoms. She was released on bail later that day.
After nearly two years, on April 9, 2026, the Wuqing District Procuratorate suddenly informed Ms. Li that she had been indicted and that she was scheduled to stand trial soon. She received another notice from the procuratorate on April 15 that her court date was set for April 23.
After the first hearing, Ms. Li was made to appear in the Wuqing District Court again on May 12. Prosecutor Gao Jin grabbed her defense statement and did not allow her to read it.
Presiding judge Li Haifeng didn’t allow any spectators at the two hearings. Ms. Li’s sister and brother-in-law were driven away from the courthouse. Ms. Li’s daughter, who was listed as prosecution witness against her will, was brought inside midway through the second hearing to persuade her mother to admit guilt.
Ms. Li, who has severe hearing loss, struggled to hear clearly during the trial. She managed to make it clear she’d broken no law in mailing letters to the general public to inform them of the persecution of Falun Gong.
Ms. Li was seized from home on May 13 and taken to the Wuqing District Detention Center. The police accused her of mailing letters to the prosecutor and the presiding judge after her two court hearings.
Ms. Li’s family filed complaints against the prosecutor and the presiding judge with the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and Commission for Discipline Inspection of Tianjin and Beijing on May 29. They learned of her prison admission on September 8. She is currently held in the Sixth Division, and they are worried about her physical and mental well-being.
Falun Gong Restored Her Health
Ms. Li’s parents-in-law died in their 40s not long after she married their son. She and her husband raised his three sisters and one brother.
Ms. Li’s husband died of an illness when she was 40. At the time, his brother and one sister still lived with them. Ms. Li never remarried and worked hard to support the family.
The hardships of life took a toll on Ms. Li’s health. She suffered from heart disease, high blood pressure, and other ailments. After she took up Falun Gong in early 1998, all her symptoms disappeared. Her face no longer looked purplish, and she became energetic.
Ms. Li’s daughter was diagnosed with cancer a few years back and underwent chemotherapy. Her prison sentencing further traumatized her daughter.
