(Minghui.org) Ms. Ding Yan, 73, in Tonghua City, Jilin Province, was recently admitted to the Jilin Province Women’s Prison to serve a three-year term because she practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Ding was initially arrested at her home on May 13, 2025, by a group of officers from the Jiangdong Police Station and the Dongchang District Domestic Security Office. They raided her home and confiscated her Falun Gong books, photos of the founder of Falun Gong, a laptop, and 3,200 yuan in cash. She was taken to the Xishan Brainwashing Center later that day and held there for 15 days.
When the police transferred Ms. Ding to the Tonghua City Detention Center on May 28, she was denied admission due to high blood pressure and was released on house arrest.
Two staffers of the local justice bureau deposed Ms. Ding at her home on November 21, 2025. Ms. Ding’s daughter answered all the questions for her and also signed some case documents on her behalf.
Ms. Ding was summoned to the Dongchang District Procuratorate on December 8, 2025, and ordered to sign more documents. She refused to comply. Her case was then moved to the Liuhe County Procuratorate and she was summoned there in mid-December. Because she refused to sign a statement to renounce Falun Gong, the prosecutor threatened to give her a heavy prison term.
Ms. Ding was arrested again around January 10, 2026, and sentenced to three years by the Liuhe County Court at an unknown time.
Previous Persecution
Ms. Ding, born in October 1953, took up Falun Gong in 1997. Her many ailments, including bronchitis and nephritis, all disappeared soon afterwards.
Since the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution in July 1999, Ms. Ding has been repeatedly targeted for upholding her faith. The police constantly harassed her and followed her when she went out.
Ms. Ding was deceived into going to the police station in mid-August 2000, and was held at the Changliu Detention Center for a seven-day brainwashing session. She was also forced to pay 200 yuan “tuition.”
Ms. Ding was arrested again on January 24, 2002, by the Tonghua City 610 Office. She was tortured at the Tonghua City Police Department overnight. The police restrained her against the wall, with her limbs spread out. They slapped her face. When they became exhausted, they poured ice-cold water over her. They next opened the window and used a fan to blow air at her. They interrogated her for the source of Falun Gong materials and names of other local practitioners. In the early morning, she was taken to the Changliu Detention Center, where she was held for 28 days.
Four officers broke into Ms. Ding’s home in late November 2006 and raided her home. Her family was terrified.
The mental distress from the persecution took a toll on the health of Ms. Ding’s husband. He passed away in 2010.
Ms. Ding was deceived into going to the Jiangdong Police Station on November 27, 2017. The police also searched her home and confiscated a few Falun Gong books. At midnight, they took her to the hospital for a physical exam. Although she was found to have dangerously high blood pressure, the police still detained her for five days.
Ms. Ding was arrested one more time on June 24, 2021, and her home was ransacked. She was held at the Changliu Detention Center and was released on bail on July 30, 2021.
