A leading international human rights group, Human Rights Watch, says the entire Asian region suffered following the September 11 attacks in the United States.
The New York-based organization, in its latest report, said governments from China to India transformed measures to counteract terrorism into new justifications for long-standing repression.
[...] In China, the report notes an increase in human rights violations. Human Rights Watch says the Chinese leadership arrested academics, closed newspapers and strictly controlled Internet content.
The group says in its campaign to eradicate Falungong, Chinese officials imprisoned thousands of practitioners and used torture and psychological pressure to force recantations.
