(Minghui.org) Ms. Zhang Jie, 58, has been illegally detained at Liaoning Women’s Prison for over six months. She went on a hunger strike to protest her persecution and is in critical condition. The prison officials refused her family’s request for medical parole.
When Ms. Zhang's daughter and mother visited her in the prison hospital at the end of April 2014, she was confined to a wheelchair, looking pale and extremely weak. The guards stated that they would not be held responsible if anything happens to her.
A prison official later phoned Ms. Zhang’s family informing them that Ms. Zhang has been constrained to her bed, fearing that she might commit suicide. Ms. Zhang’s family do not believe this to be true, as the teachings of Falun Gong forbid suicide.
Ms. Zhang was arrested in October 2012 when she was seen clarifying the facts about Falun Gong and the persecution. She was held in the Nangou Detention Center for one year, where she was brutally tortured. As a result of her mistreatment, she contracted tuberculosis and developed diabetes and heart disease. She was sentenced to three years in Liaoning Women’s Prison in October 2013.
