(Minghui.org) Mr. Liu Daoquan, an entrepreneur in Chongqing, has been unlawfully arrested and detained in Baihelin Detention Center for over a year for practicing Falun Gong. Even though Mr. Liu has not been found guilty of any crime after two trials, local Domestic Security personnel still refuse to release him.
Criminal procedure law in China requires the court to render a decision within three months of receiving a case. The law also sets case-processing time limits individually for the police station, the Procuratorate, and the court, in the spirit of protecting against this type of indefinite detention. Mr. Liu was arrested at home on April 9, 2013, not tried until November 6 and 15, 2013, and remains under police detention as of June 2014, fourteen months later.
Mr. Liu's arrest and long-term detention have caused both financial and emotional hardship for his wife, son, and grandfather. Because his family relied on his income, his wife became ill and lost a great deal of weight from depression and anxiety. Tremendous mental pressure caused his 11-year-old son to become reticent and withdrawn, who is also having a hard time keeping up with his schoolwork.
Shocked and depressed over Mr. Liu's arrest and detention, his 98-year-old grandfather cannot eat or sleep well and is often found in a stupor in front of his grandson's photos. Mr. Liu's parents, in their seventies, took on the role of providing encouragement and strength for other family members.
Mr. Liu, 44, started his company in 1998. After he began practicing Falun Dafa, he ran his business according to the teachings of the practice. The business grew from a few employees to more than one hundred in just a few years. He is well respected in the community.
