(Minghui.org) Ms. Zuo Kangwei was put on trial at the Qinghe District Court in Huai'an City, Jiangsu Province, on July 30, 2014. This was the third time that she was tried at this court. The trial was called because of “additional evidence” obtained from the Qinghe 610 Office.
The trial only lasted 30 minutes. Prosecutor Kang Lili read out the evidence, but Ms. Zuo stated that it was all fabricated.
Events of Second Trial
Ms. Zuo, 55, was arrested by a security guard on March 5, 2014, after entering the campus dormitory of the Huaiyin Institute of Technology on Beijing Road. Yin Wei and others from the Jiankang Road Police Station arrested her. She was beaten at the police station, before being transferred to the Huai'an Detention Center.
Officials from the Qinghe District Procuratorate issued a warrant for Ms. Zuo's arrest after she had been detained for 12 days, on March 17.
The second trial against Ms. Zuo was held on June 18, 2014, at the Qinghe District Court. Her husband Mr. Wang Shixin and another relative were the only family members allowed in courtroom. Mr. Wang defended her in court, and pleaded “not guilty” on her behalf. He insisted that practicing Falun Gong does not violate any existing Chinese law, and gave sound arguments in her defense. He also demanded that they release her.
Prosecutor Kang Lili and acting judge Zuo Wenjie did not respond to the defense and hastily ended the trial.
Despite being unable to prosecute Ms. Zuo on any legal basis, they refused to release her. She was held for 42 days, while they were collecting more “evidence”, until the third trial on July 30.
Persecution History
Ms. Zuo and Mr. Wang have experienced endless harassment and abuse from the authorities since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999.
Ms. Zuo was illegally sentenced to three years in prison in 2001 by officers from the Qinghe 610 Office.
Mr. Wang, a physics teacher at the Beijing Road Middle School of Huai'an City, was also sentenced to three years in prison and was dismissed from holding any public office.
