(Minghui.org) Mr. Li Hongshan was tried on May 21 for talking to people about Falun Gong, a spiritual practice being persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party.
The 43-year-old man used to be a border control agent in Heilongjiang Province, but he was discharged after being sentenced to five years in 2003 for refusing to give up the practice that cured his severe migraines and insomnia.
Mr. Li moved to Beijing upon his release in 2008, only to be arrested again on August 25 last year. He was first held at the local police station before being transferred to Beijing First Detention Center, where he was brutally tortured.
During the latest trial, both Mr. Li and his lawyer emphasized that he broke no law by exercising his constitutional right to believe in and spread information about Falun Gong. Judge Wang Weiji of Daxing District Court kept interrupting them and adjourned the hearing before the lawyer was able to finish his defense argument.
Mr. Li currently remains at Daxing District Detention Center, unsure of when the judge would schedule another hearing.
