(Minghui.org) I received a scholarship for pursuing a doctorate at a British university in 2015. In addition to the reimbursement of tuition, I was also offered a monthly stipend of £400 for my living expenses.
In November 2015, however, I realized that the school was mistakenly depositing £1,250 per month into my bank account, which was £850 over the promised amount.
I immediately reported the error to the finance department and deposited the extra money into a separate bank account. However, the school did not correct the error and again sent me the same amount in December.
I notified the school again. Some Chinese students suggested that I keep the extra money because the school, not I, was responsible for the mistake. They added that my scholarship payment had been set up in the school's payroll system and that no one would care to correct it. But I did not budge.
I am a Falun Gong practitioner. I conduct myself in accordance with the principles of “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.” I don't take anything that doesn't belong to me.
I talked to the school a third time in January 2016. This issue was finally resolved and I returned the total amount of the overpaid stipend. The school wrote me an appreciation note. If I did not report the mistake, I would have collected an extra amount north of £30,000 over the course of my three-year stay.
