(Minghui.org) An 80-year-old man from Penglai City was sentenced to 7 years for distributing information exposing the persecution of Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline based on the principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
Mr. Chen Guangwei failed the medical examination required for prison admission, and is now appealing his sentence while free at home.
The elderly man used to suffer from severe heart ailments, and he’d sometimes go into sudden cardiac arrest during his sleep. His symptoms gradually disappeared after he began to practice Falun Gong in 1996.
Having enjoyed a tremendous improvement in his quality of life, Mr. Chen never shied away from telling people that the persecution is wrong. He became a target and had his home ransacked by police on March 6, 2012.
He managed to escape, only to be arrested on January 21, 2014. The police later released him on bail, but got him indicted in February that year.
Mr. Chen was tried on August 13, 2014. It would take almost two years for the court to deliver its verdict of guilty. Mr. Chen immediately filed an appeal upon receiving the verdict on July 18 of this year.
