(Minghui.org) A higher court in Fushun City issued a decision to overturn the guilty verdict against a local resident and ordered a retrial.
Ms. Cai Wei, 67, was arrested on September 23, 2016, for refusing to renounce Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime. The Wanghua District Procuratorate indicted her with “using a cult to undermine law enforcement,” a standard charge used in Falun Gong cases. The Wanghua District Court later sentenced her to 3 years and fined her 10,000 yuan.
Ms. Cai filed an appeal with the Fushun City Intermediate Court, which ruled on March 14, 2017, that, “There lacks clear evidence to charge Cai Wei with said crime and sentence her to prison. We therefore overturn the original verdict and order a retrial by the Wanghua District Court.”
Ms. Cai, who remains on bail four days after her arrest, applauded the higher court’s decision. She said that she was targeted for arrest simply for her belief, which is supposed to be protected by the Chinese constitution. Moreover, the charges were fabricated, as the police claimed that she was distributing Falun Gong materials outside a local detention center at the time of her arrest, when in fact she was just there waiting to see someone.
