(Minghui.org) A Kunming City, Yunnan Province resident appeared in court on May 23, 2019 for writing letters to raise awareness about the persecution of his faith in Falun Gong.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Li Wenbo was arrested on May 17, 2018 for writing two letters to the authorities. In the first letter, he requested the removal of propaganda posters against Falun Gong displayed in his neighborhood. In the second letter, he demanded that the farmers’ association in his village return a 10,000-yuan fine it had levied for his practicing Falun Gong.
The letters later became evidence against him.
After nearly six months of detention at Jinning Detention Center, Mr. Li developed medical conditions. He was released on bail and put under house arrest on November 2, 2018.
The details of Mr. Li's hearing on May 23, 2019 remain to be investigated.
For not renouncing Falun Gong, Mr. Li was given three years of forced labor in 2005. Only 14 months after he was released, he was arrested again and sentenced to five years in prison in 2009 for writing an open letter to expose the communist regime’s persecution of Falun Gong.
Mr. Li was brutally tortured in both the labor camp and prison. He was kept in solitary confinement for extended periods of time. The guards beat him and forced him to wear handcuffs and shackles at all times.
He developed inflammation and ulcer in the esophagus, as well as a severe stomach problem. His health recovered after he resumed practicing Falun Gong upon returning home.
