(Minghui.org) A 66-year-old woman in Benxi City, Liaoning Province is serving eight months for her faith in Falun Gong. Her husband received a call on January 13, 2020 saying that his family was not allowed to visit her or make deposits at the prison for her to purchase daily necessities. He suspects that she might be tortured for holding fast to her faith.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Zhou Yulan’s ordeal dates back to May 2, 2018 when she was arrested for talking to people about Falun Gong on the street. Although she was released on bail soon, she was arrested again on July 8, 2019 after being reported for talking to people about her faith while visiting her son in Guizhou Province.
The police in Guizhou sent her back to Benxi. She was denied admission by the Benxi City Detention Center the next day due to her severe tuberculosis. The police put her under house arrest.
Ms. Zhou was tried by the Hengren County Court on November 1, 2019 and sentenced to eight months on November 21.
Judge Wang Sijie forced the detention center to accept Ms. Zhou on November 22 and promised to pay for her medical expenses, after the detention center rejected her admission the day before due to her tuberculosis.
Instead of paying for Ms. Zhou’s medical care as he had promised, the judge later ordered Ms. Zhou’s family to pay for it. They refused to comply.
Ms. Zhou was sent to Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on December 31, 2019 after her appeal was rejected.
