(Minghui.org) A mother and daughter in Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, were both sentenced to four years in prison for their faith in Falun Gong.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Ren Huiping was arrested on October 23, 2019, for distributing informational material about Falun Gong. Eight officers ransacked her home at night and also arrested her daughter, Ms. Zhang Kang, with the excuse that the printer Ms. Ren used belongs to Ms. Zhang.
The pair’s arrests have left Ms. Ren’s husband struggling to care for his elderly parents and young granddaughter (Ms. Zhang's child) all by himself.
After being held in the Hongta District Detention Center for over six months, Ms. Ren and Ms. Zhang were tried in the Jiangchuan County Court on June 9, 2020. The judge announced their verdicts on June 20 but didn’t inform Ms. Zhang’s lawyer until July 29.
Ms. Zhang used to teach Chinese at a middle school. Because she refused to renounce Falun Gong, the school fired her in 2016. Although she filed a complaint with local the human resources bureau, it was quickly dismissed.
