(Minghui.org) A Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province resident was sentenced to 22 months on November 22, 2022, for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Li Xiuyun’s wrongful conviction came only four months following her arrest on July 8. Both she and her husband, who does not practice Falun Gong, were taken to the police station. While her husband was released shortly after, Ms. Li was detained for 15 days before being released on bail.
The Jinlin District Court held a 15-minute hearing of Ms. Li’s case on November 22, 2022. Her family was informed of her sentencing days later.
This isn’t the first time that Ms. Li, 61, has been targeted for her faith. She was first arrested in late October 1999 and taken to a brainwashing center. The guards forced her to watch videos smearing Falun Gong, and also ordered them to slander Falun Gong herself and write statements to renounce Falun Gong. When she refused to comply, they intimidated her and forced her to stand for long hours.
Ms. Li was summoned by the police in November 2000. They questioned her about Falun Gong materials that were confiscated from another practitioner’s home. She refused to provide any information. The police slapped her in the face more than ten times with a long wood plank. Her face immediately swelled up.
Ms. Li was taken to the brainwashing center again on January 20, 2001, and wasn’t allowed to go home for the Chinese New Year on January 24.
An officer broke into Ms. Li’s home in April 2002 and ordered her to sign a statement to renounce Falun Gong. She rejected him.
Ms. Li was arrested again on June 10, 2017, while riding in a car. The police released her after extorting 3,000 yuan from her.
