(Minghui.org) A Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province resident who is nearly 60 was sentenced to three years and four months on May 5, 2023 for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Wang Wenjie’s ordeal stemmed from an earlier arrest together with Ms. Hao Liqin on December 23, 2018, for talking to people about Falun Gong. Both of them were held in the Qinglong County Lockup and released on bail on January 5, 2019.

The police forced the two women to go to the Changli County Procuratorate on January 22, 2020 to sign their case documents, to be submitted to the prosecutor. About two months later, on March 19, the police showed up at the two women’s homes and drove them to the procuratorate for an interview with the prosecutor.

To avoid the persecution, both women lived away from home and hid from the authorities. Ms. Hao was arrested again on October 27, 2021. She is still detained at the Qinhuangdao City No. 1 Detention Center.

As soon as Ms. Wang returned home on March 10, 2023, she was arrested and taken back into custody at the Qinhuangdao City Lockup. She appeared in the Changli County Procuratorate on April 6. Only two of her family members were allowed to attend the hearing. Her lawyer entered a not guilty plea for her and she also testified in her own defense.

Judge Zhang Qiusheng announced Ms. Wang’s verdict on May 5. In addition to the three years and four months of imprisonment, she was also fined 5,000 yuan. Due to pressure from the authorities, her family gave up appealing the case.

Ms. Wang used to suffer from low blood pressure and many other ailments. She regained her health three days after taking up Falun Gong. After the persecution started in 1999, she has been targeted many times for not renouncing her faith. She was arrested in the spring of 2000 and taken to a brainwashing center, where she was forced to watch materials demonizing Falun Gong and stand under the scorching sun for long hours.
