(Minghui.org) Two Fangshan District, Beijing residents were sentenced to one year in prison by the same court for their shared faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Li Runfen and Mr. Wang Weiming’s cases were unrelated, but they were both arrested in 2022.
Ms. Li Sentenced in 2023
Ms. Li was arrested by officers from the Fangshan District Police Station in 2022 and later released on one-year bail. Judge Liu Ying of the Fangshan District Court sentenced her to one year in prison in 2023. The details of her indictment and trial are unclear.
Ms. Li was allowed to serve time outside of prison and released after her wrongful conviction was announced. The police, however, took her for a physical examination the day after she returned home. The exam results indicated that she was in poor health, but the police handcuffed her and drove her straight to a detention center. Six months later, she was transferred to the Beijing Women’s Prison.
Mr. Wang Sentenced on Unknown Date
Mr. Wang was arrested on December 27, 2022 after a police camera recorded him distributing Falun Gong informational materials earlier that day. The Shilou Police Station officers raided his home and confiscated his computer, Falun Gong books and other valuables.
After spending the night at a pre-trial center, Mr. Wang was taken to the Fangshan District Detention Center the next day. He was denied admission because a physical examination found him to be in poor health. The police then released him on bail. The Fangshan District Court sentenced him to one year in prison at an unknown date. He was taken back into custody on July 14, 2024 to serve time. He is currently held at a newly built detention center. Prior to his latest persecution, he was arrested one more time on May 4, 2001 and given an unknown term of forced labor.
