(Minghui.org) Ms. Liu Xiaohua’s family learned in early March 2024 that she had been admitted to prison to serve a 5.5-year term for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Liu, a 59-year-old resident of Changchun City, Jilin Province, was arrested during a police sweep on February 19, 2023. The Changchun City Police Department and the Erdao District Domestic Security Office were responsible for the group arrest.
Ms. Liu’s loved ones went to the Jilin Province Women’s Prison upon learning of her prison admission, but were denied visits with her. They do not know any other details of her prosecution, such as which court sentenced her at what time.
This is not the first time that Ms. Liu has been targeted for her faith. While still living in Shiyan Town, Tumen City, Jilin Province, she was sentenced to four years in 2011 and brutally tortured at the Jilin Province Women’s Prison.
Details of Past Persecution
Ms. Liu was arrested at home on the morning of March 4, 2011, by agents from the Shiyan Town Police Station and the Tumen City Police Department. They took her to the police department and interrogated her for 24 hours straight, with her feet shackled.
Officer Zhou from the Shiyan Town Police Station hit her in the back and slapped her in the face. He also burnt her fingers with cigarette butts.
Captain Wu Jilong from the Tumen City Police Department and his subordinates Quan Yongzhe and Zheng Wenyong also tortured Ms. Liu during the interrogation. Wu poured water into her clothes. Quan hit her in the lower body, stomped on her toes, poked her eyes with his fingers, and slapped her in the face. Zheng burned Ms. Liu’s hand with a lighter.
After the marathon interrogation, the police tied Ms. Liu’s hair to the back of a metal chair and did not allow her to sleep for four days in a row. Twice she passed out and the police poured cold water to revive her before resuming the torture.
Ms. Liu was later taken to the Tumen City Detention Center. During the required physical examination, she was found to have a rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, and lack of blood flow to her heart. Her lower body was covered with bruises from the beatings at the police department.
Ms. Liu stood trial at the Tumen City Court on August 30, 2011 and was sentenced to four years. She was admitted to the Jilin Province Women’s Prison around October 19, 2011.
Team lead Zhang instructed inmates Wang Fuxia, Ma Yan, and Wang Xiufen to monitor and abuse Ms. Liu. They forced her to sit on the ground with a piece of newspaper inserted in between her legs. She would be punished whenever the newspaper fell. She also had to seek permission before using the restroom, but wasn’t always granted the access.
