Ms. Liu Hexiang from Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, passed away less than a year after she finished serving a three-year term for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. Ms. Yu Fangzhuang, who was sentenced with her back in 2020, was taken back into custody in November 2023, even though she was 90 years old and had already finished serving her term at home.
Ms. Liu was arrested on July 1, 2020, while visiting Ms. Yu, then 87. The police, who happened to be ransacking Ms. Yu’s home, proceeded to raid Ms. Liu’s place, confiscating her Falun Gong books, three printers, a computer, and office supplies.
Both women were interrogated for 12 hours in the Kuaizixiang Police Station. Ms. Yu was released on bail around 8 p.m. due to her advanced age, while Ms. Liu was taken to the Nanchang City No.1 Detention Center.
The women appeared in the Xihu District Court on December 21, 2020. Ms. Liu was sentenced to three years and fined 10,000 yuan. Ms. Yu was given six months and fined 2,000 yuan.
Ms. Liu was taken to the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison after her conviction. The authorities there use every means possible to try to “transform” the imprisoned Falun Gong practitioners, meaning they torture them to make them submit and renounce their faith. Ms. Liu was tortured and became emaciated and developed colon cancer. Even though she was on the verge of death, the prison refused to release her on medical parole or take her to a hospital. They had a doctor operate on her inside the prison. She was very weak when she was released in June 2023 and passed away nine months later on March 29, 2024. She was 70.
Although the judge initially allowed Ms. Yu to serve her time at home due to her advanced age, Xihu District Domestic Security Division officers took her back into custody on November 21, 2023, even though she was 90 years old and her term had long ended. It’s not clear if the authorities will keep her in prison for six months or even longer. Her family is worried about her safety and health.
