(Minghui.org) A Dongying City, Shandong Province resident was recently sentenced to one year for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Zhang Xiuqun was buying groceries at a farmers’ market around 10 a.m. on April 24, 2024, when two plainclothes officers suddenly showed up. They pushed her down and stepped on her, snatching her purse and ordering her to turn in her cellphone. Four other plainclothes officers then joined them and took Ms. Zhang to the Junmachang Police Station.

The police threatened Ms. Zhang’s family not to seek justice for her and they also kept the family in the dark as to her case status.

Minghui.org later confirmed that Ms. Zhang was followed by a plainclothes officer while she was distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. The officer deceived her into giving him a copy of the materials before making the arrest with other officers. The police also intimidated and deceived her friends into providing information against her.

The police submitted Ms. Zhang’s case to the Dongying District Procuratorate around August 2024. She was later sentenced to one year by the Dongying District Court and is now serving time at the Dongying City Detention Center.

Ms. Zhang is a retired employee of the Shengli Oilfield. Her husband passed away many years ago due to a disease, and she raised their two children by herself. Due to years of hard work, she developed many ailments. After taking up Falun Gong in April 1996, she learned to appreciate the adversity and was willing to live by the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance to grow her character.

Since the onset of the persecution in 1999, Ms. Zhang has been subjected to constant harassment and forced to attend brainwashing sessions. She was arrested on November 6, 2010 for talking to people about Falun Gong. The police searched her and took photos of her.
