A Hefei City, Anhui Province, resident died less than two months after her ten-hour detention for practicing Falun Gong.
Ms. Liu Guoyu was arrested on August 23, 2015, and held at the Baogong Police Station from 2:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. the next day. Her health quickly declined after she was released. Her forehead and eyes hurt and her legs were swollen. She then became bedridden and was rushed to the hospital. The doctor there said she had organ failure and was beyond treatment. She died at home on October 12, 2015, at the age of 77.
Prior to her latest persecution, Ms. Liu was repeatedly targeted for her faith. From July 1999 to 2000, she went to Beijing three times to appeal for Falun Gong. After one such trip in April 2000, she was arrested and held at the Anhui Province’s Liaison Office in Beijing for 25 days and fined 1,250 yuan. She was then escorted back to Anhui and held for some additional time.
Ms. Liu was arrested again in 2003 and sentenced to three years. While serving time at the Anhui Province Women’s Prison, she was beaten, forced to stand for long hours, deprived of sleep, and made to study materials slandering Falun Gong. She was emaciated and had shaky legs by the time she was released.
