Around late January or early February 2000, Mr. Hou Yagang went to visit a friend who was also a Falun Gong practitioner like him. His wife, Ms. Li Li, received a phone call from the police hours later saying that her husband had a sudden disease while driving and was rushed to the hospital. When she got to the hospital, he had already died.
The Shanghai resident’s passing was preceded by his parents-in-law’s deaths. All three of them, along with Ms. Li, suffered repeated persecution for their shared faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Li’s father, Mr. Li Yuqin, died on January 20, 2016, 17 hours after police surrounded his house and shut off utilities in an attempt to arrest him. He was 68. His wife, Ms. Li Wenjuan, died on December 10, 2021, after suffering years of persecution. She was 71.
Ms. Li Li was pregnant when her husband and parents were all arrested on June 5, 2009. She was so traumatized that she miscarried the next day. She herself was also arrested several times over the years. She was denied a promotion at work and deprived of her right to have a passport because of her faith. She later had a baby girl, who was not allowed to attend a public kindergarten when she reached school age in July 2014. After numerous appeals, Ms. Li eventually got her daughter enrolled months later.
Before he married Ms. Li, Mr. Hou was arrested on February 6, 2002, and given two years of forced labor. He was shocked with electric batons and subjected to other forms of abuse while in detention.
