A woman in Tonghua City, Jilin Province died in September 2008, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong. She was 52.
Ms. Chi Yan, a former teacher with the Tonghua City Experimental Elementary School, took up Falun Gong in 1995. She recovered from her many ailments, including neurosis, heart disease and arthritis. Her irritable temperament was also gone and she became a more pleasant person.
After the Chinese Communist Party launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999, Ms. Chi held firm to her faith and was repeatedly targeted. She went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in July 2000 and was arrested. After being escorted back to Jilin, she was given one year of forced labor at the Heizuizi Women’s Forced Labor Camp in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin.
The labor camp guards shocked Ms. Chi with electric batons and also forced her to do hard labor. She later discovered a lump in her right breast and was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Ms. Li was released ahead of time, only to be arrested in March 2001, days after the Changchun City’s TV signal was tapped into and shown programs exposing the persecution of Falun Gong. There was a report that she was one of the practitioners that participated in the incident.
During the interrogation, the police doused Ms. Chi with water and shocked her with four electric batons simultaneously for a long time. They specifically targeted her sensitive areas, including her armpits, eyes, teeth, neck, legs, and breasts.
Ms. Chi told the police she had a tumor in her right breast and an officer replied, “Then I’ll shock the tumor!” She curled up in pain.
After several days of such torture, Ms. Chi was covered with injuries and bruises. She had bloody blisters on her neck, her lips and breasts were extremely swollen, her teeth became loose, and the wounds under her armpits hardened into calluses. Her wrists also swelled badly due to the tight handcuffs. She lost feeling in her fingers. Her pinkies didn’t regain feeling until six months later.
Ms. Chi was given an unknown term of forced labor and taken to a labor camp in May 2001. Team Lead Li Tongming used various excuses not to forward her parole request to relevant departments. Her tumor had grown and her armpits were swollen. She could not sleep well and became emaciated. The guards still forced her to do hard labor and did not allow her access to medical care until November 2001. By then the doctors said it was too late to do anything to help her. Only then was Ms. Chi released on parole.
Li was heard saying to someone, “Her days are numbered. She has at most maybe 10 more days to live.”
Ms. Chi managed to survive but was unable to return to work. She remained on paid leave until November 2005 when the local education bureau stopped her pay on the grounds that “she quit voluntarily.” They made the decision after she refused to attend a brainwashing session aimed to force her to renounce her faith.
The local Minzhu Police Station officers often harassed Ms. Chi at home, especially around sensitive dates. They threatened to take her back into custody as soon as her health improved a bit. She died in September 2008.
