A 52-year-old man in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, died on September 18, 2025, after suffering years of persecution for his faith in Falun Gong.
Mr. Xie Chunfeng graduated from Zhongshan University with a law degree in 1996 and landed a job as a clerk at the No. 2 Criminal Court of the Shantou City Intermediate Court. He took up Falun Gong in 1997 and soon recovered from his stubborn rhinitis.
After the Chinese Communist Party launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999, Mr. Xie held firm to his faith and was repeatedly targeted. His last arrest was in September 2001 when he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. After one year of detention in Beijing, he was brought back to Guangdong and detained at various facilities (including a labor camp) for another year. After he was eventually released in September 2003, he faced frequent harassment and later went into hiding. He did not return home until eight years later, in 2012.
Mr. Xie was not the only person in his family who had been targeted for practicing Falun Gong. His mother, Ms. Cai Yuchang, was sentenced to one and a half years in 2011 and served another 3.5-year term between December 2020 and June 2024. His older brother, Mr. Xie Chunze, was given two years of forced labor and almost died of torture in custody. Their younger sister, Ms. Xie Chunyao, was held at a labor camp for an unknown amount of time. The siblings’ father, Mr. Xie Jiqi, who did not practice Falun Gong, faced constant threats from local authorities because of his wife and three children’s faith. He died before 2020.
Persecution of Mr. Xie Chunfeng
After the persecution began in July 1999, Mr. Xie went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. On August 1, 1999, he was arrested and taken to the Tiananmen Square Police Station for doing the sitting meditation in Tiananmen Square. After being released, he was put under house arrest and then sent to a brainwashing facility.
Shortly thereafter, Mr. Xie was detained and tortured in a mental hospital. He was subsequently subjected to multiple arrests, brainwashing, several periods of long-term detention, torture, and forced labor.
Tortured for Nine Months in Shantou University Mental Hospital
In September 1999, the Shantou Intermediate Court bailiff, with the help of Lin Kunchi, the assistant to the president of the Shantou Intermediate Court, arrested Mr. Xie again and took him to the Shantou University Mental Hospital.
Upon his arrival at the hospital, Mr. Xie was tied to a bed and injected with unknown drugs, which caused severe symptoms, including neck spasms that resulted in his head constantly swinging to the left. He also felt dizzy, his eyes turned a yellowish color, and his head felt very heavy.
After nine months of torture at the mental hospital, Mr. Xie was forced to quit his job at the court.
Detained at a Forced Labor Camp for One Year
In October 2000, Mr. Xie was arrested while doing the sitting meditation by officers from the Waisha Police Station and personnel from the Chenghai 610 Office. He was charged with “disrupting social order” and given one year of forced labor at Sanshui Forced Labor Camp in Guangdong Province.
Tortured for a Year at Daxing Detention Center
Upon being released from the labor camp ahead of time, towards the end of September 2001, Mr. Xie went to Tiananmen Square to appeal for Falun Gong. He was arrested by officers from the Tiananmen Square Police Station and held in the Daxing Detention Center in Beijing for one year.
Since Mr. Xie refused to identify himself during his detention, officers from the State Security Bureau punched, kicked, and knocked him down repeatedly in an effort to force him to give them his real name. They also stripped off his clothes down to his underwear in the cold of winter, dragged him out into the snow, and left him on the frozen pond’s ice for more than half an hour. He was also shackled for six months at the detention center.
Tortured for Four Months at Chenghai Detention Center
In October 2002, the Shantou City 610 Office and personnel from the City Intermediate Court picked Mr. Xie up from Beijing and escorted him back to Shantou. They detained him at the Chenghai Detention Center for four months. On one occasion, the deputy head of the detention center covered Mr. Xie’s mouth with tape and handcuffed his hands and feet together. This torture lasted for a whole week.
Detained at a Forced Labor Camp for a Second Time
Mr. Xie was transferred from the detention center to the Sanshui Forced Labor Camp on February 25, 2003. He was confined in solitary confinement for ten days because he refused to give up his belief, and was shocked with electric batons many times.
On one occasion, five prison guards used three high-voltage electric batons to shock Mr. Xie all over his body except the genitals, while they poured water on him. The torture lasted for over one hour–until the electric batons were fully discharged.
Upon his release from the labor camp on September 13, 2003, the Shantou City 610 Office immediately sent Mr. Xie to a brainwashing center. He was not released until three months later.
Several days before the 2004 Chinese New Year, Mr. Xie left home to avoid being arrested again.
