(Minghui.org) A 75-year-old man in Yongji County, Jilin Province, was admitted to prison in October 2025 to serve a five-year term for his faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
Mr. Liu Ji was arrested at home on October 30, 2023, and taken to the Xiyang Town Police Station. As he refused to answer the police’s questions as to where he got his printer and Falun Gong informational materials, an officer slapped him in the face and threatened to “straighten him out” after taking him to the local detention center.
While undergoing a physical exam at the Yongji County Hospital, Mr. Liu was found to have high blood pressure and was denied admission by the detention center. The police refused to release him, but took him to a different hospital for another physical exam. His blood pressure remained high and he was denied detention again.
After officer Li Qicong of the Xiyang Town Police Station released Mr. Liu on bail, a prosecutor from the Chuanying District Procuratorate challenged the decision. The prosecutor went to Mr. Liu’s home twice to depose him, mainly demanding information about where he got the printer and Falun Gong informational materials.
Mr. Liu was made to report to the Chuanying District Court three times and was sentenced to five years on July 8, 2024. Judge Li Zhongcheng accused him of being “too stubborn” during a hearing. Due to Mr. Liu’s high blood pressure, he was still denied admission by the detention center.
An officer from the Xiyang Town Police Station called Mr. Liu twice in September 2024 and ordered him to go to the hospital for physical exams. His blood pressure remained high each time. When the police called again in late September 2024, Mr. Liu had gone into hiding to avoid further persecution.
Several plainclothes officers went to harass Mr. Liu’s family on October 11, 2025 and saw Mr. Liu, who had just returned home not long before. They dragged him into a police car and took him to the Kouqian Detention Center that night. He was transferred to the Gongzhuling Prison on October 14. His family hasen’t been allowed to visit him yet. They are very worried about his safety and health.
This is the second time that Mr. Liu has been jailed in the past five years. He was previously arrested on November 12, 2019 for hanging up a banner that read “Falun Dafa is good” and was sentenced to two years on May 22, 2020.
While he was serving time at Jilin Prison, Mr. Liu’s wife worried about him so much that she developed various medical conditions, including uremia, pericardial effusion, and lung cancer. She passed away after struggling with the conditions for three years.
Mr. Liu was released around July 2022, only to be arrested again in October 2023 and sentenced to another five years.
