A 77-year-old man in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, died on January 23, 2023, after suffering years of persecution for his faith in Falun Gong.
Mr. Wang Shilin took up Falun Gong in the summer of 1996 and soon recovered from back pain, chronic colds, and stomach issues. He also quit smoking and drinking and became kinder and more tolerant.
After the Chinese Communist Party lunched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999, Mr. Wang held firm to his faith and was repeatedly targeted. He was arrested a total of five times: on June 20, 2000; April 24, 2003; December 11, 2005; June 3, 2006; and January 16, 2007. Following his third arrest, he was also given an unknown term of forced labor but was released on parole two months later after he ended up in critical condition as a result of torture.
Mr. Wang endured horrific torture during each detention. He was once force-fed for over three weeks and twice chained to the ground in a spread-eagle position for 15 days in a row. Dongguang Police Station officers harassed Mr. Wang many times in September 2017 after discovering that he had filed a criminal complaint against former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin for launching the persecution of Falun Gong.
Mr. Wang’s health continued to decline, and he became incontinent. His family rushed him to the hospital on November 1, 2018. Eight days later, the police showed up at his home when he was still hospitalized. They went to the hospital to seize his key and returned to raid his home. They confiscated all his Falun Gong books and informational materials.
Mr. Wang’s symptoms worsened and he fell into a vegetative state. He died the day after the 2023 Chinese New Year, January 22.
