(Minghui.org) Two elderly women in Heze City, Shandong Province, were admitted to the Shandong Province Women’s Prison in recent months to serve time for their faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
The two cases were unrelated, with one prison admission taking place four years after sentencing and another happening soon after the wrongful conviction.
Sentenced in August 2021 and Admitted to Prison in August 2025
Ms. Gao Menghua, around 75, was initially arrested on July 30, 2021, while caring for her 100-year-old mother in the hospital. Her disabled husband, in his 70s, had to fend for himself after her arrest. She was tried in the Cao County Court in August 2021 and sentenced to four years. Likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was allowed to postpone serving time until mid-August 2025.
Prior to her latest persecution, Ms. Gao was arrested multiple times for her faith. She was given a forced labor camp term in October 2000 for going to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. Due to her high blood pressure and other symptoms, she was released on bail. She was arrested again in October 2005 for talking to people about Falun Gong. The court sentenced her to four years in September 2006. The prison denied her admission three times due to her poor health, but eventually admitted her after being pressed by the deputy director of Cao County Police Department.
Sentenced in March 2025 and Jailed Soon Afterwards
Ms. Li Fengmei, around 70, was arrested in August 2018 for talking to people about Falun Gong. She became incapacitated after being abused in the Cao County Detention Center and was released on bail. As soon as her health improved a bit in 2025, the Cao County Court sentenced her to one and a half years in March this year and ordered her back into custody to start serving time in prison.
