(Minghui.org) Mr. Zhang Huiqiang, 58, from Fushun City, Liaoning Province, is about to be tried because he practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Mr. Zhang was arrested outside his apartment building on the night of November 21, 2024 by more than twenty officers from the Shenhe District Domestic Security Division. At 10:30 p.m. that night, the police broke into his home and searched every inch of the place, including under the bed and behind the sofa.

Mr. Zhang’s wife noticed that the police ripped off every page of a table calendar which had information about Falun Gong and claimed each page was a separate piece of “evidence.” When she condemned them for fabricating evidence against her husband they threatened to arrest her. They also seized some blank flash drives and ripped off an old decoration with the word “Fu” (good fortune in Chinese) on it.

The police didn’t conclude their raid until 12:30 a.m. the next morning. They didn’t allow Mr. Zhang’s wife to verify the confiscated items or issue a list of the items as required by law. They took her to the Dongzhou Police Station for interrogation. Officer Yu Bing questioned her and asked where she and her husband got the calendar. She said that she didn’t know because she did not bring it home. Yu immediately responded, “If it wasn’t you, then your husband brought it home.” Before she realized it was a trap to have her incriminate her husband, Yu and another officer ordered her to sign the interrogation records but they did not allow her to read it. When she hesitated they threatened to target her daughter. Under pressure, she signed her name.

Mr. Zhang was taken to the Nanta Police Station right after his arrest. Two days later he was transferred to the Shenhe District Detention Center. He was issued a formal arrest on November 27, 2024.

The Dadong District Procuratorate indicted Mr. Zhang on February 23, 2025 and forwarded his case to the Dadong District Court. He was later transferred to the Dadong District Detention Center, where he is awaiting trial.

This is not the first time that Mr. Zhang, who worked as an engineer at the Fushun Ethylene Chemical Factory, a state-owned enterprise, has been targeted for his faith. After the persecution began in 1999, he was denied promotion even though he was awarded “employee of the year” every year.

On May 23, 2002, Mr. Zhang was arrested while on his way home. He was held in the basement at his workplace, where he was tortured for 84 hours straight. See the related report for his personal account of the ordeal. He was later sentenced to five years around July 2002 and admitted to the Shenyang Third Prison four months later. He was forced to do hard labor for up to 14 hours a day.

Mr. Zhang was transferred to the Shenyang First Prison in November 2004. He and about five other practitioners went on a hunger strike on November 10, 2005, after another practitioner was beaten so viciously by the guards that his stomach was perforated. The prison barred his family from visiting him in order to prevent them from finding out about his condition. On December 29, 2007, he was put in solitary confinement after the guards found on his person a MP3 player containing audio Falun Gong lectures.

Mr. Zhang was fired from his job after his wrongful conviction. His mother was so traumatized that she became ill and later died.
