A woman in Changchun City, Jilin Province, became severely ill in September 2026 while serving a five-year term for her faith in Falun Gong. She was taken to a designated hospital and died there shortly afterwards.
Ms. Xu Yanhua, born on November 25, 1952, was two months shy of her 74th birthday. Her passing capped decades of persecution for upholding her faith.
The single mother of two started to practice Falun Gong in 1996 and soon recovered from her many ailments, including heart conditions, chronic fatigue, and cervical spondylosis. The injuries she sustained on two separate occasions (once after being pushed down on the pavement by her ex-husband and another time after she slipped and fell on a snowy road) healed, too.
Ms. Xu also gave up the idea of suing her ex-husband for failing to pay child support. She and her children started to enjoy life again. After the Chinese Communist Party started persecuting Falun Gong in 1999, she held firm to her faith and was repeatedly targeted. She was arrested in May 2022 and was forced to live away from home after being released.
Ms. Xu was next arrested on February 10, 2023. She was sentenced to five years with a 10,000-yuan fine seven months later and admitted to the Jilin Province Women’s Prison.
It is unclear what abuse Ms. Xu was subjected to in prison, but at least 45 other Jilin practitioners were known to have died over the years after being incarcerated and tortured in the same prison.
The guards checked Ms. Xu into a designated hospital in September 2026 after she became severely ill. She died there soon afterwards.
Ms. Xu was not the only person in her family targeted for practicing Falun Gong. Her son, Mr. Wang Peng, was twice jailed for a total of 7.5 years. See the related report for details of the mother and son’s persecution.
