(Minghui.org) Ms. Huang Dagui, 72, in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province, was sentenced to one and a half years on May 9, 2026, because she practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Huang was arrested on September 3, 2025, after she was followed by officer Zhang Meng of Beihu Police Station for distributing Falun Gong materials. Her arrest was approved soon after and the police submitted her case to the Shunqing District Procuratorate on November 3.
Ms. Huang’s family was not notified of her court date but her lawyer told them. Her 82-year-old husband was barred from attending her trial at the Shunqing District Court on December 16 because he was “listed as a prosecution witness.” A bailiff held him in a room by himself, until the hearing ended.
Ms. Huang’s lawyer entered a not guilty plea for her. He argued that his client broke no law in exercising her constitutional right to freedom of belief and that it was illegal for the police to follow and videotape her without establishing a case against her in the first place.
The lawyer also pointed out that the interrogation records were invalid because Ms. Huang did not sign it. He added that the police violated legal procedures by having He Haizhou of the 610 Office which is affiliated with the Nanchong City Police Department validate the prosecution evidence, instead of using a third-party agency as required by law.
The lawyer challenged prosecutor Liu Ying to explain how Ms. Huang “undermined law enforcement,” as stated in the indictment.
Ms. Huang testified in her own defense and insisted that she didn’t violate any law by practicing Falun Gong or spreading information about it.
Judge Dang Lijun sentenced Ms. Huang to one and a half years on May 9, 2026. She is appealing the conviction.
Ms. Huang and her husband relied on her monthly income of about 1,000 yuan from doing some cleaning jobs. Her detention leaves her husband in a dire financial situation.
Past Persecution
Ms. Huang heard about Falun Gong in 2001, while she was detained for selling fake invoices. A Falun Gong practitioner who was held with her explained the illegality of the persecution and how Falun Gong taught practitioners to be good people. She started practicing and held firm to her faith after she was released.
Ms. Huang was arrested on April 11, 2002, for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. While she was held at the Yuechi Detention Center, the guards handcuffed her to a bed for 17 days and didn’t allow her to use the restroom. She struggled to walk and her limbs shook uncontrollably after she was released from the bed. She was arrested again on April 8, 2003, and held in a brainwashing center for an unknown amount of time.
Ms. Huang was arrested another time on April 24, 2016, also for distributing Falun Gong materials. Over 20 officers searched her workplace and home on May 13, 2016. They submitted her case to the Jialing District Procuratorate in late July and she was tried by the Jialing District Court on November 28. The judge sentenced her to one year with a 2,000-yuan fine on January 10, 2017.
