(Minghui.org) Since the 610 Office was established in Anlu City, Hubei Province, in February 2001, it has orchestrated many brainwashing sessions for Falun Gong practitioners over the years.
In particular, the Changsong Brainwashing Center operates year-round and detains not only local practitioners but also those from out of town.
Starting in February 2023, the authorities “rebranded” the brainwashing centers as “Care Studios,” adding various functions such as “publicity and education,” “psychological counseling,” and “social assistance” to disguise their actual purpose.
The new “Care Studios” have associates from the local justice bureaus, police departments, psychologists, and social workers. They work closely with the police to collect and track basic information about the practitioners. With ample funding, the authorities incentivize the associates with monetary rewards when a practitioner is “transformed.”
At a meeting of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Committee on January 18, 2026, the operation and information management model used by the Hubei Provincial 610 Office was awarded a five-star rating and was recommended for introduction to other provinces.
Yang Junwen, who assumed the position of deputy director of the Anlu City 610 Office in 2015, has actively promoted the brainwashing system. Between April and May 2026, he wrote several articles in local newspapers slandering Falun Gong.
Below are select cases of persecution.
Mr. He Wende, in his 50s and a teacher at the Chengxiang Elementary School, was arrested at work on October 14, 2015. He was taken to the Chuyue Brainwashing Center and held there for over a month. He went on a hunger strike to protest. When his wife went to the school to ask about him, the principal refused to provide any information due to pressure from the 610 Office.
Ms. Wang Hui was arrested on November 21, 2016, and taken to the Chuyue Brainwashing Center. The authorities arrested her in retaliation for her efforts to rescue her husband, Mr. Wang Huashan. He was detained in a brainwashing center in Wuhan City, the capital of Hubei Province, for several months. She was arrested just days after Mr. Wang was released.
Mr. Huang Xuejun was transferred from the Tangxunhu Brainwashing Center in Wuhan to the Chuyue Brainwashing Center on December 10, 2016. For five days, he was subjected to brainwashing by two “helpers” around the clock. He nearly had a mental breakdown and fell into a delirious state.
Mr. Yan Ji, a former police officer, was arrested at work on May 24, 2022, and taken to the Changsong Brainwashing Center. He was slapped in the face by Nie Hanzhang of the Anlu City 610 Office. He was forced into early retirement after he was released three months later.
Ms. Xu Guiyun, Ms. Mao Cuiying, Ms. Wu Xiufang, and Ms. Shi Liying, all in their 70s, were taken to the Changsong Brainwashing Center in September 2023. Because they remained firm in their faith, Yang Junwen submitted their case to the local procuratorate. Each woman was sentenced to seven months and fined 3,000 yuan.
Ms. Kong Jiuhong was arrested and taken to the Changsong Brainwashing Center on October 24, 2023. She held a hunger strike to protest. The authorities later sentenced her to seven years with a 10,000-yuan fine.
Ms. Yang Furong, in her 50s, became incapacitated after being held in a brainwashing center in 2023. Her husband, Mr. Yan Youzhong, was detained for over a month in the Changsong Brainwashing Center for seeking justice for her.
Mr. Zhou Binsheng was arrested on June 5, 2024, for distributing Falun Gong materials. He developed severe mental and physical conditions due to the abuse in the Changsong Brainwashing Center.
Ms. Zhou Xi’e was arrested on October 11, 2025, after a surveillance camera recorded her distributing Falun Gong materials. She was held in a lockup for 15 days and then transferred to the Changsong Brainwashing Center for over a month.
Mr. Yan Sanming was seized at his home at 9 p.m. on June 3, 2026, and taken to the Changsong Brainwashing Center. The police also ransacked his home and confiscated his Falun Gong books and a music player. His detention left his severely ill wife and son, who suffers from depression, in dire circumstances.
