A 75-year-old man in Fushun City, Liaoning Province, passed away on September 12, 2019, after enduring decades of harassment and surveillance for his faith in Falun Gong, Minghui.org recently learned.

Mr. Geng Xiangwu

Mr. Geng Xiangwu, a qigong enthusiast, began to practice Falun Gong in 1996. After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the nationwide persecution campaign in 1999, he and other volunteer practice site coordinators were among the first group of practitioners to be arrested.

While serving a three-year term at the Wujiabao Forced Labor Camp, he suffered rapidly declining health. He struggled with chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, and high blood pressure. Fearing that he would die there, the labor camp released him. Upon returning home, he resumed practicing Falun Gong and then recovered.

In his spare time, Mr. Geng went out to talk to people about the persecution. In retaliation, the local police and residential committee staffers harassed him and threatened to take him back to the labor camp.

Because Mr. Geng wouldn’t stop his efforts to raise awareness about the persecution, the police arrested him again in May 2001 and took him back to the labor camp.

This time, he was subjected to various torture methods, including beatings, shackling, being forced to sit on a cold concrete ground, and force-feeding. He experienced an abnormal heartbeat again, as well as a surge of gallstones and kidney stones. The labor camp released him again.

The police ordered Mr. Geng to stop practicing Falun Gong and to report to the labor camp on a regular basis. They also tried to force his next-door neighbors to report his daily activities to them, but his neighbors refused.

Later, the police forced the community secretary to mobilize residents who were on low-income subsidies to monitor Mr. Geng, threatening to terminate the payments if they didn’t comply. The police also installed high-resolution surveillance cameras facing all rooms in his home.

Unable to endure the harassment and surveillance, Mr. Geng was forced to live away from home for over ten years.

While visiting a local practitioner named Ms. Tian Caiying on April 22, 2016, Mr. Geng was arrested and taken to the Yongantai Police Station. His home was also ransacked. The police took him to the Fushun City Detention Center that afternoon. He was denied admission due to his poor health and then released.

The police made frequent harassing phone calls to him. If he didn’t answer it, they would call his two children. They also threatened his children to monitor him and prevent him from going out to talk to people about Falun Gong.

The continued harassment took a toll on Mr. Geng’s health. He passed away on September 12, 2019.
