(Minghui.org) A married couple in Songming County, Yunnan Province, are facing prosecution for their faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Mr. Wang Zhengli, 61, a hydraulic engineer, and his wife, Ms. Wang Quanfen, 57, a former lab technician, were arrested on July 21, 2026. The Songming County Police Department submitted a request to the Xundian County Procuratorate on August 27 to issue a formal arrest warrant for the couple. It is unclear if the request has been approved. Both Xundian County and Songming County are under the administration of the capital city of Kunming.
Mr. Wang is currently held at the Songming County Detention Center, and his wife at the Kunming City Detention Center.
Prior to his latest persecution, Mr. Wang served a 7.5-year prison term (August 2014 – February 2022) for distributing Falun Gong informational materials.
Details of Latest Arrest
At around 12:15 p.m. on July 21, 2026, Mr. Wang, born on March 15, 1965, received a phone call from officer Wan Rui saying they were outside his door for a follow-up visit with him.
Mr. Wang believed in Wan and opened the door. Several officers barged in and restrained him.
Ms. Wang, born on April 27, 1969, was cooking in the kitchen. She tried to film the police using her phone, but a male officer snatched the phone and pressed her face down to the ground. He then sat on her, a woman standing at 5’2’’ and weighing about 110 lbs. She felt sharp pain and extreme humiliation with a male’s buttocks on her. She yelled, “He’s roughing me up!” Only then did the officer get off her. A woman officer then yanked Ms. Wang up.
Officers then took Ms. Wang and her husband away. The remaining 20-plus officers next spent nearly eight hours raiding the couple’s home. They confiscated the couple’s valuables worth a total of nearly 300,000 yuan, including all of their computers, cell phones, printers, and their son’s laptop worth 30,000 yuan.
At around 7:40 p.m., Fu Liren, head of the Songming County 610 Office, and Shi Yueyuan, captain of internet surveillance at the Songming County Police Department, were seen leaving the home with a plainclothes officer in Fu’s private car. Fu and Shi directed the entire raid without producing any arrest or search warrant. Other officers also left after them.
Son Threatened with Subpoena
The couple’s son, Mr. Wang Yifei, was surveying the aftermath of the raid at 8:04 p.m., when Shi returned with an officer (badge number 285192). They ran straight to the couple’s home office on the second floor and grabbed a piece of paper on the desk.
Mr. Wang filmed the police with his phone. Shi snatched the phone and threatened to subpoena him. She also refused to produce her ID or search warrant. After she stepped out the door, she turned around to take pictures of Mr. Wang using her personal phone. She eventually left with the other officer in a police cruiser at 8:07 p.m.
Couple Given Criminal Detention
Mr. Wang Yifei received a call from the Songyang Police Station on July 22, 2026, notifying him to pick up his parents’ criminal detention notice. He went and was forced to sign the notice, which accused his parents of “using a cult organization to undermine law enforcement,” a standard pretext used to frame Falun Gong practitioners.
Mr. Wang Zhengli was initially held at the Songming County Police Station and later transferred to the Songming County Detention Center. His wife was put in the Kunming City Detention Center.
The Songming County Police Department requested on August 27, 2026, that the Xundian County Procuratorate issue a formal arrest warrant for the couple.
