(Minghui.org) Mr. Zhang Nanping, 53, from Shanghai was sentenced to five years following his arrest in July 2023 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. Minghui.org recently confirmed that Mr. Zhang was admitted to the Yuzhang Prison in his home province of Jiangxi following his wrongful conviction.

Mr. Zhang, a native of Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, moved to Shanghai more than two decades ago. Officers from the Dongxiang District Domestic Security Division in Fuzhou City traveled nearly 450 miles to Shanghai in July 2023 to arrest him. They took him back to Fuzhou, where he was indicted, tried, and sentenced. The details of how he was prosecuted remain unclear at the time of this report.

This is the third time Mr. Zhang was sentenced to prison since the persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999.

Mr. Zhang was arrested by officers from the Sanlin Police Station in Shanghai on March 19, 2002. He was taken to the Pudong New District Detention Center the next day and held in cell 105. A guard surnamed Xu was in charge of his cell. The detention center director was surnamed Tan and the deputy director was surnamed Xue.

To force Mr. Zhang to renounce Falun Gong, the guards tied him in a spread-eagle position and restrained his limbs on a wood board. He wasn’t allowed to use the restroom or take showers. When it was over 30°C (86°F), the guards still kept a thick comforter on him. He was soaked in sweat and developed a strong smell. Because he was handcuffed for a long time, the bones in his wrists were exposed and it took eight months fo them to heal. The guards also beat him and verbally abused him frequently.

During the interrogation, an agent from the local 610 Office kicked Mr. Zhang, who was handcuffed and shackled, on his right foot. His foot immediately swelled and he had difficulty walking. The guards also stuffed his mouth with dirty rags and kicked him. Complaining that he was walking too slowly, the guards dragged him by his collar.

In addition to the guards, the inmates, led by the head of the cell Chen Laibao, were also instigated to torture Mr. Zhang. One of them stomped on his chest. He fainted due to the pain. For a long time afterward, he kept coughing and there was blood in his phlegm. Before he stopped coughing, another inmate slapped his face with a shoe and taped his mouth shut. He was suffocating and soaked in sweat.

The Pudong New District Court sentenced Mr. Zhang to five years in December 2002. He was transferred to the Tilanqiao Prison on January 23, 2003. He was subjected to non-stop torture and humiliation during his imprisonment. He was released on March 18, 2007.

Mr. Zhang was arrested again at work in Shanghai on July 20, 2020. The police ransacked his home and confiscated his computer, printer and Falun Gong books. He was put in criminal detention two days later. The Minhang District Detention Center denied his lawyer’s request to visit him. He was later sentenced to 14 months by the Fengxian District Court.
